Lost Share Holding Statement

If you have a lost share holding statement, or you don’t have a document that shows your Security Reference Number (SRN – more on that here), you have two options:

1. Have us conduct an electronic SRN search – more on that here; OR
2. Contact the relevant share registry and have a new statement posted to you.

Electronic SRN searches are not possible for every situation, so you may be forced to use method 2, which is the focus of this post.

Obtaining Your SRN from Share Registers

If you are unable to qualify for the electronic SRN search method, you will need to request a new one to be sent to you by the company’s share registry.  On request, the share registry will post you a new share holding statement.  There may be a fee levied by the share registry, usually about $50 per statement.

All ASX listed companies use third party share registries.  That means they outsource the job of knowing who owns what shares to a organisation that specialises in tracking this; as you can imagine, with billions of dollars of shares changing hands every business day, this is a big job!

There are two big share registries in Australia, Computershare and Link Market Services.  These two organisations manage the registries for most, but not all of the larger ASX listed companies.

Which Share Registry to Request Lost Share Holding Statement From?

To determine which registry you need to contact, refer to this list or if the company you own shares in, is not on the list, visit the ASX website here to find out which registry to contact.

Simply phone the relevant share registry and infomr them that you have a lost shareholding statement and ask that a new share holding statement to be sent out that shows your holder number (also called Security Reference Number, or SRN).

Once you have your holding statement that shows your SRN, you can sell your shares!
